On e bay when items are not in stock they up the prices from say £30 to £500 so that no one buys/bids, but it keeps the listing live for when stock comes in. Other than that, the shoes seem OTT expensive.

Yeah, but "Carbon material produces the same stiffness and performance from the first kilometer to the last". So they're just the same at the end of a session as they were when it started. You can't expect that kind of consistency to come cheap. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Are we getting to a point where £900 is not a lot of money to some people.

No, we're getting to the point where some people need to get their heads examined for even thinking that £900 is not totally insane for cycling shoes. You know, these are footwear to ride a push bike with, not a finest quality handmade, made to measure, pair of gents leather shoes. Then you might be able to justify the huge price tag, just like for a Savile Row tailored suit.

A very close friend of mine spends upwards of £18,000pa on holidays, he retired at 49, 16 years ago his wife retired a few years after, they have way more money coming in than they need and a substancial sum in the bank, would you say they are wasting their money on holidays?

I've been wearing the same 60 quid Specialized Rock hopper shoes for every ride for 18 years. They haven't fallen apart yet. They don't change much either.
Can I sell em for £900?
There’s specialist websites that you probably could sell them on ...

If the bloke is retired and is living off the income from some shrewd investments in shares or has sold a business he once owned then banked the cash, then I don't see anything wrong with this sort of spending, so long that he gets plenty of bang for his buck and enjoys it. He can't take it with him, so might as well enjoy the rewards for his efforts/shrewdness.
It would be insane of someone of working age with all the normal living costs to meet, to blow all their money though, without investing some of it for retirement. Sounds like in this case the bloke has got his head screwed on, so his lifestyle is sustainable given his level of income. Spending what you can easily afford is fine; being a mug and spending money you haven't got is plain dumb. I still wouldn't pay £900 for a pair of cycling shoes though, no matter how wealthy I was - they wouldn't pass my VFM/common sense criteria.

The shoes are not aimed at people who cannot afford them.

No, but can any off-the-peg, mass produced pair of shoes really offer so much in terms of comfort, lifespan, utility etc that could justify that sort of price tag? I could afford to spend that on shoes if I really wanted, but I simply don't see how they offer any value. As another poster has said, you could get a secondhand car for that - in fact every car bar one that I have ever bought cost less secondhand than the price of those shoes. Being able to afford something doesn't mean you should buy it anyway - regardless of how poor value it may be.
