Hi Bill,

Cyclestreets is good and free - runs on android. My favourite is Viewranger - of which there is also a free version....

Hi Bill

I use Quo from Mapyx for the route planning on the laptop and then export as gpx files.
It's pretty easy to use and although you pay for the maps you download you only need to buy the ones you actually need for each trip.

There are lots of cycles apps for the iphone and I have tried most of them.
I like Cyclemeter for day rides to track my distance, speed, etc
For tours or longer trips I tend to use MotionX. It's pretty relable and I have used it to successfully to do JoGLE, C&C and other UK tours.

I mount the iPhone in the BikeConsole and it's been outstanding staying perfectly dry in some real downpours. The iPhone also survived without any damage and hardly a mark on the BikeConsole when I failed to clip it onto the mount properly a couple of times and it went flying onto the tarmac!

You will need a battery booster because the iPhone battery won't last a full day with a mapping app running. I have the power monkey and it will give a complete full charge to a nearly flat iPhone (the solar panel is next to useless in this country so don't bother with it).

I've probably done something like 3,000 miles with this set up and I wouldn't change it.
I do also take a paper backup of my route printed out of Quo when on a longer trip, just in case and when I have to/want to deviate from the planned route.

To be honest I'm now very glad I didn't buy a dedictated GPS device and have to carry another piece of kit + charger.

To be honest with you, I use Google Maps. There's also a nice service called "mapmyride", which is neat, but I find it can be a bit buggy. I tend to use GM to map it automatically, then make my own adjustments and such like. I've not had any problems!
