I was a bit too tired to relate the story last night, but a friend of mine once lived with a bloke who didn't like dogs.

Despite this he agreed when she said she wanted an Alsatian puppy, but from almost day one he began to hit it with a rolled-up newspaper or magazine when it did anything "wrong".

This carried on as the dog grew, and despite my friend's best attempts to train the dog with gentle discouragement/reward - her boyfriend continued to hit the dog with a newspaper to "teach" it.

I lost touch with my friend but bumped into her a few years later. I asked how things were, and enquired after the boyfriend and the dog. The dog was still around, the boyfriend wasn't (I can't say I was too displeased to hear that).

It turns out the dog had become ill, and being in no mood for being hit, had turned on the boyfriend and bit his hand - hard - making him drop the newspaper and dash off to hospital for stitches - quite a few by the sounds of it. He'd returned to demand the dog go - "it's him or me!!!" - and so my friend got rid of him and kept the dog (who had since been an absolute pleasure to own and whom now has a 'new lease of life').

I wouldn't normally advocate violence as a means of "teaching" but in this case I think the dog got it right!!!

Cheers,
Shaun
