If so, here's a great way to waste a shedload of time (already mentioned in another thread, but thought it deserved a wider audience):

http://www.shipais.com/index.php

Choose an area, and watch the shipping. Set to refresh every couple of minutes. Mouseover each vessel to see name, speed, destination, type of vessel...

Go to Fleetwood to see the ill fated Riverdance:

Marvel at how anything makes it across the English Channel without a collision!:

Why are they going the wrong way. A couple who's destination is Rotterdam are heading south-east.

Has Rotterdam moved? I never got the change of address card?

I recently read some material to do with AIS (Automatic Identification System). The dudes that work in centres such as Dover monitor traffic on several screens (busier than Heathrow, they claim). Ships appear as circles with a 'spoke' eminating from it. If I'm not mistaken, the angle of the spoke tells you direction of travel, length of spoke for speed of vessel.

Has Rotterdam moved?

The destination has to be keyed in manually at the start of each voyage, sometimes there are more important things to do(or maybe they just forget:biggrin:)and the previous destination remains displayed.
