A farmer found that his cow and goat would eat all the grass in a certain field in 45 days, that his cow and goose would eat it in 60 days, but it would take his goat and goose 90 days to eat it all.

If he turns the cow, the goat and the goose into the field together, how long will it take them to eat all the grass. Assume that the grass is not growing each day.

Cow + Goat = 1/45 of grass per day
Cow + Goose = 1/60 of grass per day
Goat + Goose = 1/90 of grass per day.

If you had a (Cow+Goat) + (Cow+Goose) + (Goat+Goose), then between them they would eat 1/45 + 1/60 + 1/90 of the grass per day = (4 + 3 + 2)/180 = 9/180 = 1/20 so it would take them 20 days to eat all the grass. That's two of each animal so one of each all put in the field together would take 40 days.

Do geese actually eat grass?

Yes indeed. Some suggest that geese make good lawn-mowers, but there are - er - other considerations, here in leafy suburbia :laugh:

Well answered, BTW!
