Gah, i started reading this thread because 'ASL' are my initials. It was just as confusing when chat rooms got popular.

Anyhow, have you noticed the similarity between an HGV's blind spot and an ASZ plus feeder lane? Personally, I keep coming back to the notion of a shared, merge-with-bikes priority zone in the left hand lane approaching junctions. No ASZs would then be necessary. The merge-with-bikes bit is so that, in the event of a fatality, the HGV left-hook would be a criminal offence. If bikes can't filter (no filter, no overtake) for 50 or so yards, that seems a fair price for surviving.

The experiences are very similar in stationary or slow moving traffic...if you did both and had some quality training in either, you wouldn't be so dismissive.

The current set up is like the rest of the badly designed cycling infrastructure..lip service to keep the vocal ones quiet, and not really that good upon closer inspection.

Rule no.2 (Rule no. 1 was no overtaking in a bike priority zone at junctions)

It gives pedestrians a shout at the right to the roads too.

Better still, just scrap the dangerous ones like asl's cos they tick boxes but increase risk. The only ones to benefit are the council's as it increases their budgets

I actually think that whilst an ASL may add value to certain junctions/parts of the road, there simply isn't a safe/good way of providing adequate 'feeder' to it, unless we take an entire lane not just a small 'passage'?

Ive got to admit, I didnt even know cyclist filter lanes for ASLs even existed until I read this thread.
