I had always assumed the Battle of Stamford Bridge was in the region of London, until Dan Snow told me otherwise this morning on UK History channel. Yorkshire, apparently.

Someone ended up at Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire instead of Chelsea FC.

When I was young (a long, long time ago in the UK) I'd hear my mother use the phrase "more haste, less speed." I understood the context enough to use it it myself--when something went awry--but hadn't a clue what the words actually meant, because I heard it as "more hasteless peed."

My thinking was that it had something to do with being peed off at the situation.

10 miles from York, and a nice little bike-pootle for me. Although Stamford Bridge is less than well supplied with cafes, it has some nice new public loos, and is a handy halfway point en route to Pocklington, which has lots of cafes.

So did I until I checked prompted by your assumption.
Strictly speaking I suppose he is Greek, but I'd assumed he was from Greece. Was more shocked to discover he was only 30 when "Forever and Ever" was a hit

And a belter of a chippy. And CrinklyCatering has been known to turn up (by arrangement, not just on the off-chance, you understand) at the duck puddle with flasks and panniers full of food for passing audaxers.

I mean this purely and absolutely as a compliment, but it wouldn't surprise me if CrinklyCatering turned up for that purpose on the off-chance! ^_^
