At what point does it become pointless upgrading a bike?

You can upgrade any component on a bike, including the frame.

Yes, but whether it's worth the cost is another matter.
I mean, when tha bike was new it cost about £330, and wasn't as good as that Triban.
I'd flog it (if you don't want an SS) and get something better.

I've had the frame for a long time and wholly regret buying it.

Well if you wanted to spend more would you be asking us? Sell it!

I bought a bike off ebay for £50 for an into town hack and didn't spend more than the cost of brake servicing and bar tape. After a year or 2's use I decided I really liked the frame (531ST) and over time, gave it a full and expensive make-over. It doesn't sound like that applies in your case.

i was in lbs the other day pricing up repairs vs replacement. i have a 2001 hard-tail terrano which needs much doing to it, but having looked at similar new machines, i felt more like fixing up the tatty old mog rather than going new, even though the money spent doing so won't add much to the bike's monetary value (if it has one at all)…
