There used to be a fantastic cycle lane between Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan.
After taking you up and over the headland, it dropped you on the central reservation of the A55, which is a 70 mph dual carriageway, tantamount to a motorway at that point.

I have planned a nice 50 miler to Llanfairfechan now. And I know where you mean. It looks like the path goes through a few tunnels as well.

Ah, we've got one of those in that there London here

The lane that the truck is driving in for no good reason gets narrower and narrower until it disappears. It's a dieters' lane.

The Cycle route alont the side of the A55 looks pretty good to me. I've not done it myself yet, much too far just now but looking at it for the future.

The cycle path runs over up the side of the hill and sort of bypasses the Penmaenbach tunnels by going over the top, it does indeed drop you down in the central res at precisly the worst possible place to attempt to cross. But Richard Brunstrom campaigned heavily and got two cracking big bridges in to allow the cycle lane to cross the carriageways. Ugly as you like, but seem to be exactly the right thing. I imagine the path over the top gives some pretty good veiws. The only dodgy bit of that path by my reckoning is that bit by Tal'y'bont (ish, its further towards aber than that really) where the cycle path is effectivley a 'pavement' to the A55. Looks terrifying to me. And always makes me double take as a driver when I see someone cycling on it as if they are coming From Bangor towards Llandudno it looks like some one is going the wrong way up the carriage way.

There is a section like that here: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=co...d=rk5ljqQFJpfxj9cBUfKiuA&cbp=12,106.65,,0,9.5 the path continues up to the next turning.

There is a similar stretch along the A55 between Bodelwyddan and St. Asaph where I enjoy nothing more than riding beside oncoming traffic, doing 70+mph, in the pissing rain. I've often done this at night and wondered what motorists think when they see a headlight coming towards them on an expressway.

[Edit] Lordy! I'd forgotten just how narrow the pavement is in the above link.

Ah, so there is. I'd forgotten about that bit. Which also means I was describing Pen-y-Clip rather than Penmaenbach. But apart from that and all the other dodgy bits I forgot about I was right, ish, a bit sort of.

Its a shame there are those pavement sections as they put me off riding up that way. (I certainly wouldn't consider riding on the carriageway itself, in either direction) large parts of the rest of it look really good.

This is on my commute. I don't think it is actually a cycle lane, as I think the pavement to the left is offically the cycle lane. You can see this better looking backwards. http://goo.gl/maps/pfUFH
However, on my first ride in to work, I came over the flyover on the dual carriageway, rather than on the cycle path and ended up in this pretend cycle lane. Very scary too

Same happens in Ystradgynlais with cycle route 43 where it runs through town, cycle lane stops and starts with no warning in 4 or 5 places and then some of it has large drains in the way which you have to go round.

No decent cycle lanes around here either. It's no surprise and no big deal either - the UK's existing road network was never designed to take what it has done and forcing a pathetic attempt at a bike lane that doesn't fit neither serves cyclists or motorists.

Drove past this yesterday, and it looks like this has been updated since that photo was taken, about 150/200 yards further along there the path widens out to the left and feeds the cycle track onto a bridge that flys you over to the other side of the railway track. From there I assume it takes you up to the roundabout at the next junction. Not sure though, google maps with cycle track function switched on seems to suggest so.
