Ah, my book says the four wheel with 2 driven wheel rule goes back to the Forties, but was enforced with varying degrees of willingness, or sometimes not at all, by the FIA. Wasn't until the 70's that they finally started to put their foot down about the number of wheels, while conveniently forgetting that jet powered cars don't have any driven wheels at all, so it seems that most of the official record holders since they 60s don't actually meet the official regs that makes their records official. Makes my head hurt thinking about it.

I used to wonder, did this project ever really have the public really interested ?
It seems like a one way ticket driving anything at 1000 mph...bloomin barmy. What's the point ?

I know. I understand that young people can be employed as engineers etc, but come on, the only point about this overblown damn thing is that it's a boy racers dream of just going very fast. Who really cares?. There are more important things facing us than speed.

The big problem in trying to secure the funding for this project going forward, was that the world has changed drastically in 10 years. Everyone wants instant results for their investment, no one cares about another few years time. Given that inflation would also eat the investment up, so 25 million would be a lot more by the time it actually ran. The most expensive / difficult bit was yet to come as well. Integrating the rocket into the build was massively challenging. I guess we’ll never know if it could work.

If I had the money, I’d have saved this project, for no other reason than I’ve met a lot of the protagonists, and I know how passionate they were about this challenge. Unfortunately I don’t have the money, so that’s me oot. I’ve no doubt they have the talent and passion required to do it, which grates even more.

I can remember watching Thrust SSC on the TV when it was going for the Land Speed Record. There was a sense of pride that a team from this country had achieved something in breaking the sound barrier and claiming a new record.
I was sad to hear that the project has been abandoned. There were a lot of people involved and it may have inspired young people to study engineering.
There are plenty of rich people who think that £25 million is loose change , but as the chap Rutan ( the chap who designed and flew around the world non stop) discovered the money given by people is inversely proportional to their wealth.
My Corgi model of Bloodhound is still in it's box.
