Suitably chastised, I've replaced the BB with the correct spacer allocations - problem solved but I can't believe I was so negligent on the previous replacement. Of course, I had to adjust the front derailleur to allow the chain to get out to the big ring (of three). I'm beginning to wonder at the young age of 68 how harder my trips have been and what toll would've been on the bike due to my carelessness.
I thought, when I was at it, that I should replace the chain as it was showing 0.75% wear only to find that the reserve chain I bought in January was sent to me as 114 links which turned out to be 116!

You pretty much always remove links when fitting new chains. The number will vary by bike and gearing setup.

I've had this bike 12 years and replaced the chain every year - they always came with the promised number of links.

Chains comes at fixed number of links that 114 or 116 figure, unless you get a long reel.

I think they just threw the wrong one in the bag. It came without the Shimano box - in a plastic bag within the postbag.

Forgive me - don't know why I typed 'Shimano' - it's a KMC X10 Chain Grey 10 Speed 114.
Did you buy it from a bike shop or on-line? There are plenty of fake KMC chains out there as well, this also includes Campagnolo stuff. Chinese knock off bike parts have the longevity of cheese.
