Ordered an item form a company, didn't realise they were using a courier, or would not have placed the order

Delivered at home, but we are not in..... simples - I arrange a pick-up from a local "convenient delivery point"

Nearest point is some 8 miles away so arrange to redirect

Arrive with emails on phone, proof of address, utility bill, delivery card and photo ID to collect package

"Do you have your passport or driving licence?"

"No - it says "photo ID""

"It has to be a licence or passport"

"My driving licence doesn't have a photo, and I don't have a passport... that is why I have this ID card"


"Unless you have a passport - you cannot collect the parcel"

"OK then - if I cannot collect it - then it will have to be returned to the company as "undeliverable""

"Do you have your passport ?- we can't return it unless we see your passport"

"No, so you are saying the I can neither collect, nor return the parcel?"

"Not unless you have a passport or photo driving licence"

Phone Courier firm who confirm that this is indeed the case, only these two IDs are acceptable, and suggest that all I can do is leave it for the automatic 7 day non-collection return. Explain that I can fly within the UK using the ID I have, but no...it is not acceptable for collections

So phone consignor and explain problem who immediately arrange collection and another package being sent by Royal Mail, who at least have a workable system for collection


It should be mandatory for companies to make it clear who they use to deliver so that the companies that use these couriers can be avoided

Indeed. After I messaged my sis about my recent lost property grumbles, she responded with this:

Xxxx wanted to attend a friends funeral 'down souff' so rather than do the usual drag on the train, I encouraged her to take a flight from Edinburgh to Southampton (they don't run this journey anymore but that's besides the point. Being an anxious traveller and flying not being her thing, she hadn't held a passport since she left the army. But I told her that it's an internal flight and she didn't need a passport. So, she booked, turned up, paid excess for her luggage at the counter. She went through the the gate and sat for ages and ages, waiting to board. She phoned to let me know that she was at the gate waiting to board and then about fifty or so minutes later, she phoned again in floods of tears - Ryanair refused to let her board because she didn't have a passport with her. She showed them her bus pass (photo ID) which as a pensioner, you might have thought would count. But no, the plane left without her.

I told her to stay put and after much hair tearing later, I got her a ticket on BMI into Southampton and collected her late and tearful. If she hadn't got the funeral to attend, she would have given up and gone home and indeed, she hasn't flown since BUT although she accepted her financial loss of the tickets bought from Ryanair because she hadn't read the small print about needing a passport, Ryanair also refused to refund the tax she paid and the excess that she had paid on her luggage which is a farking cheek given that they hadn't actually carried it anywhere!

I have a love hate relationship with Parcel Force (Royal Mail) & DHL. When they work, they work really well. But when they dont. they really dont.

-parcels being sent to the wrong depot/delivery office which adds anywhere between another day or two to deliveries
-Parcels being put down on the system as 'delivered' but not delivered at all. and no 'calling card' was dropped to let you know they attempted delivery despite you being home all day.
-Booking a collection sometimes means Parcel Force wont turn up for an entire week to collect despite already having paid for the service -- more headaches to chase up.

Never mind DHL damaging your parcels in transit -- in my experience that seems to happen a lot.

Having worked in the DHL depot in Nine Elms and a good few years in Royal Mail back when they had a depot further down the road I can say that its a miracle anyones letters and parcels get delivered in one peice.

You don't actually have to change the licence, so long as you have informed the DVLA of the change, you can keep a letter showing that this is the case.

Also paper licenses do not have the same expiry as the photo licenses so you can avoid the paying every ten years con

As for the passport, it has expired, and will be renewed when I need it in January

Royal Mail collection is slightly bizarre. If my parents (whom I live with) go to pick up a parcel for me, they have to take my ID, so I give them my driving licence. Their ID, which shows they live at the same address and identifies them, isn't acceptable, even though they could have picked up my licence off the street.

When I moved in 1996 we went though the correspondence and they were quite happy with the situation

I'm not surprised. Getting in to their Leeds depot is almost impossible and it takes ages.

This was my example on Friday - when they were supposed to deliver the parcel next door but didn't. So I had a 15 mile round trip to get it.

That'll soon be the same trip for Royal Mail parcels.

I'm intrigued by the thought that, in order to get my bus-pass, I needed to produce my passport; why then is my bus-pass not acceptable to some as a form of photographic ID ?

Local Royal Mail collection place are fine, though - even if their opening hours need to be checked carefully before going ...
