So following further reoccuring issues with my back the quacks have said I can't ride long distances anymore(well by his definition long is actually a 30 minute warm up).

So not exactly very happy at the moment my irritation is two fold... Firstly I love cycling, secondly there's my Allez Elite that is now just gathering dust and can't see it wasting away in my conservatory.

Anyone want to swap backs?

So may not be on here for a while... thanks everyone for everything while I have been on here, except you MacB your just a sarcastic Tw*t (Only Joking;))

Just because you can't ride a hunched over crotch-rocket, doesn't mean you can't ride bikes. Look for something with a slightly less extreme riding position. It's only in this country we have an obsession for 'sporty' bikes, look at Holland for example, get a sit up and beg - be a trend reviver (would have said setter, but these bikes were the norm in the uk before the 'man' took over with his advertising)

Have you asked him about recumbants you might be ok with one of those. Or see a quack who specialises in sport (we've got one at my surgery) and ask him about recumbants.

It is an option, but probably not for a 6 months or so, I may have to have an operation but even afterwards they have said I probably won't be able to do much. Although I have never been good at listening to advice.

Surely you must be able to get a bike set-up that doesn't hurt your back.
What about a 'bent?

I guess everyone's back problems are different, but as someone who's suffered severe lower back pain for over 15 years I know how frustrating and debilitating it can be. When I returned to cycling 16 months ago, that didn't make my back pain any better, in fact it made it worse. However, I've found that by combining cycling with exercises to keep my back mobile (e.g. walking) and strengthen the muscles, I can keep the back well under control. In fact I've not had severe back pain now since Christmas and that's by far the longest I've gone without back pain for over 15 years.

When you say 'quack', do you mean GP, specialist or osteopath? The last time I visited the osteopath, he told me that the health benefits of cycling and the fact that I'd lost so much weight due to cycling far out weighed the downside.

PS. I wouldn't recommend running for someone with lower back pain.

Lower back pain hasn't been mentioned. Personally, I'd recommend running for just about everything. I even ran once with two broken toes to help them mend quicker (I got an orthotic made to ensure they weren't weight-bearing).

Bad luck Wiggsie. How about sitting upright on a turbo for fitness sake at least?
Have to agree about MacB, though:evil:

Thanks for all the kind words guys, I am not resigning to a life without cycling just yet, I will be back on a bike at some point just may take a year or so.

Sports injury clinic have recommended no long stints on bikes for foreseable future and doc's said not to do it again (but rarely ever believe what they say).

I would rather risk my back on a bike than running TBH Paul, I am a big dude and running is fairly high impact. I generally struggle running anyway, never been able to run far, can swim for 10k no worries, but run half a mile and I am screwed! I have my eye on a pretty comfy exercise bike for post op recovery and plan on swimming as much as possible, dont want to put on any of the tubbiness the cycling shed.

3BM if you want the frame back then no worries otherwise I shall donate to the first interested CC'er only (hopefully will do more than you or I did with it).
