Without wishing to be a bit rude, that might be too much of a minority interest.
Nothing rude about it, as anyone living in both areas already know what it means to be a minority interest. There is a public funded ferry service between both points in the summer and a couple of private water taxis in use all year. It's pie in the sky, but if small communities gave up on every opportunity before the fight even started, they would have disappeared long ago.

There is a bridge Denmark to Sweden. Built using artificial islands, and, a tunnel section. The tunnel section is to avoid aircraft flight path for nearby airport, I believe.

Oresund Bridge. It is "only" 7.5 miles long however. It is a combined road and rail bridge.

Here for rides.
one of the 70s or 80s proposals had a submerged midsection to reduce (but not eliminate) the impact to shipping. That's another few billion.
The Bridge/Artifical Island/Tunnel combo linking Copenhagen and Malmö cost €3billion in 2000 and is what, seven/eight miles long?

A similar crossing of the channel for a few billion quid would be an absolute stunning bargain.

Nope. To ensure free passage of shipping in a very busy waterway, it being the main sea route into/out of the Baltic. Aircraft fly over the bridge all the time. Lovely view.

The engineering challenges are fascinating.
An enclosed bridge deck would shield high sided vehicles from wind.
The tunnel section could be formed from sunken tube segments bolted together and pumped out - cheaper than using TBMs.

But still bonkers.
Full length rail tunnels would be safer.

Surely, the forces on the closed deck protecting the trucks would eventually bring the bridge to failure?

He was using it to illustrate that there are other ways to connect our island to France that should be considered.
I'm interested as to what ways. other than bridge, ferry, tunnel and aeroplane.
And phone.
And swimming.
