Watched a tiny bit of bttf yesterday, where they leaped into the future - 2015 and flying cars!

Must have missed them.

Also used to be amused by 1984, so far in the future that anything could be possible.

2001 was another film that over-estimated tech advancement.

Fortunately the future is never quite what one expects it to be. Years ago, sitting up in the small hours with my father, we watched the first moon landing. His comment was very telling: '…I never doubted we would land on the moon one day. What I never expected was that I would be able to watch it happening live'.
We all marvelled at the moon; but nobody mentioned the media. Which achievement was the greater? Hard to say.

Well, 1984 tech certainly was not over-estimated! 'Telescreens' everywhere, with cameras and microphones monitoring us. Big Brother IS watching us!!

The tech isn't, but the timeline was a bit optimistic.

I'll have to dig out my Eagle Book of Rockets and Space Travel from 1958. They must've based their predicted timeline on how quickly aviation took off and assumed it'd be similar after sputnik, with family trips to Mars and Venus possible by the late 80s. It's cute, and there's a bonkers prototype spacesuit!
