I've got several gigabytes of data I want to archive, and was wondering about copying it onto DVDs.

Am I right in assuming that a standard disk writing program like Nero will allow me to copy all the files onto DVD? And how much data can I expect to get onto each DVD?

Your standard DVD will only hold 4.7Gb of data.

When I used to rely on CDs I would package my files into 'disc sized' folders and then move each folder onto a disc.
Done this way you only have one 'file' on the disc index and you can fill the disc. It is also easier to check for damaged or failed discs.
If you just transfer individual files each file name would be indexed and that can lead to a 'disc full', due to the disc index being full of file names, even though there is still space on the disc.

Now I just back up onto two external had drives, one weekly and the other monthly for archiving.

Extenal drives are fairly low cost now and much easier to back up then using DVDs.

Get some decent software and it's a piece of cake. I have a couple of external disks which I use for "off-site" backups which I leave in the office but I also have a dedicated NAS on my network to back up data files.

What backup software works the best? I've only used a Microsoft one which I don't like very much. I can't seem to get it to do exactly what I want.

There's plenty of good backup software available. Norton Save and Restore and (the more complex/fully featured) Norton Ghost are both good. I have also previously used a shareware program called Handy Backup which seemed to be simple and effective.

In my case I am really wanting to archive large numbers of files from a shared disk, so want to be able to just drag and drop them onto a DVD.
