Well, Newby Bridge actually. Up at the caravan for the weekend and went out for spin on a cold but dry morning. Coffee and toast in Cartmel then onto Newby Bridge by some very quiet lanes. Just dropped onto the A590 when the rear wheel started to shudder. My first puncture. Wheel off, tyre off, tiny fragment of metal found in tyre and removed. New tube inflated, inserted into tyre then.....over an hour later my thumbs gave up I was so cold and frustrated I gave in to the urge to use a lever to get the last bit of tyre back into the rim. Then the damn thing would not inflate I must have nipped the new tube. Mrs Domus collected me and the bike. I shivered all the way back for a hot shower and a bowl of soup. :cold:
A guy on a bike slowed down, asked if I was ok then carried on after I told him I was struggling. :cursing: Any easier tyres than Gatorskins?
Must get some practice.

Why not just use levers straight off, I do. Are your rims made of cheese?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I ve always had to use levers to get the last bit of the tyre on the rim , my thumbs aint brilliant though .
Have you got wire rimmed gators or " foldable " version ? i found wire tyres might be a bit cheaper but are harder to put on but dontget me started on gators anyway as i personally do not rate them and this year i have been using another tyre and had less punctures .

I always use a lever to get the last bit of the tyre back on. Never had a nip problem. I always pop a few psi of air into the tube when I'm seating the tyre on the rim. I think it helps to keep the tube away from the tyre bead

Put talc on the bead of the tyre next time it's off and you'll be amazed at how easy it becomes. And cross that you didn't do it years ago.

One of my favourite films, I always use the title to describe a bad event in my life.

Thumbs still sore

Frustrating isn't it? I feel your pain and have struggled in the cold myself.

I now carry a pair of lightweight gloves in my saddlebag. They help keep your hands warm and clean, while also allowing you to exert a little more pressure to get the last part of the tyre over the rim.

Actually have the opposite problem which manifest itself on a forum ride a couple of years ago. I never struggle getting tyres on but got caught out one cold wet long ride trying to get a tyre off after a puncture. The 700x35 tyres practically fall off my hybrid commuter on a normal visit so I don't carry levers on that bike. That one time, on a cold wet windy seafront after riding close to 100 miles I waved the other riders on but then discovered I didn't have the strength left to pop the tyres off as I normally do. I resorted to rummaging around in the gutter and a nearby bin for anything I could use as a lever and did eventually manage.

I've had that done to me when i hit a kerb once and went sprawling across the pavement. A woman wound down her window and asked if i was ok. I was about to say not really i've duffed my knee in, when she wound her window back up and drove off. Why did you ask if you weren't interested in the answer i thought.

Come on Skol, it wasn't that cold and wet was it?

Actually it was....I don't think I've been much colder on a bike than that final run into Llandudno
