Cheating by parents is common in sport. In Nigeria my colleague sometimes finds that his young daughters are playing tennis against girls two years older, whose parents mis-declare their ages so as to win tournaments. The older of the two sisters was also cheated in a tournament in the UK last month when a girl bullied her out on the court into accepting a different score then into allowing her to call two shots "out". I don't understand tennis but apparently this means you take a shot and don't like it so you claim it was "out". My colleague's daughters are mixed-race and the opponent was an English public school girl at a posh club in Norfolk during their holidays, so my colleague's daughter has put that one down as an example of how xenophobia will affect her in life.

Maybe I'm an old git (no 'maybe' about it if I'm honest) but what's the point of cheating? Aside from top flight sportsmen and women where they stand to make financial gain, everyone else is doing nothing more than kidding themselves. Why lie to yourself about how good you are?

Sadly, there are people out there who'd believe their own bull.

Surely it is far more noble and satisfying to lose graciously than to "win" by cheating or by taking unfair advantage over a fellow competitor..

I've tried to find it but i can't, about a male tennis player in the mid 60's who questioned the umpire's decision which went in HIS favour. He therefore lost the match instead of winning and going into the next round. He is remembered for his noble sporting actions over any achievements he made on a tennis court. Does anyone else remember this?

No, but a similar thing happened earlier this year:
