Bad peddal technique

So, it's not unusual to spot the 'numptys' who cycle using their heels but i was rather taken aback when i saw a roadie in all his lycra with his cleats atached to the heel of his road shoes.

Ankle flexibility problem maybe ? I know someone (not a cyclist) who has very stiff ankles...that might explain it...

Surely this would have required him to deliberately drill new holes in the soles of his shoes?

Sounds too specific to be a mistake or accident. There's someone on here -found him-> redcogs with mobility problems that means he/she's got a modded crank to cope with reduced mobility. He/she might have a better idea. Might also be a way of dealing with different leg lengths, although I would have thought that different crank lengths might have been a better solution.

Yeah, I thought that. The main thing is, if it works for him, it's fine.

Although, did you actually see the cleats attached to the heels? Or was he just pedaling with heels on the pedals. He might have been suffering with sore feet and taking the pressure off for a little while.

Whatever the answer, am I alone in finding the original post just a little judgemental? There seems to be an awful lot of criticism on this site of the way other people ride their bikes.

Hmmmm.... I always get a bit exasperated when so many cyclists on a cycling forum are unable to spell 'pedal' or 'pedalling' properly.

The cleats were definately attached to his heels (yes, both). I wasnt being patronising as some of you seem to suggest but i for one found it really quite strange. And yes, i do have a problem with poor riding technique before you all ask. Its a bit like when my mother in law drived 15 miles in my car in 1st gear. These people need a slap

This reminds me of a thread a month or three ago on bikeradar about the most efficient way to cycle. A journalist had been told by some kind of bodydoctor that cycling with the heels reduced back strain. This prompted the observation that the same logic would lead to the recommendation that we should walk in a lying-down position.

Drove. Drove, not drived. And that's different, that's doing damage to your car. If this guy had gone to the trouble of setting his cleats up on his heels, one must assume he had a reason for it, and the worst that will happen is that he'll damage himself, not you.

I know plenty of people who've had to adapt bikes or technique to suit disabilities. And there are a couple of them I'd love to see you try to slap.
