I use overshoes and they are excellent but don't forget water can still penetrate from below (the sole isn't covered). This only happens on the wettest days and I combat it by putting my feet in plastic bags before putting my shoes on.

If you've wearing cycle clothing I find the best solution to keeping feet warm is this:

Buy a pair of bib longs that are too long in the leg for you (I have 29" inside leg so most are too long). Try on and measure length to end of toes. Cut to length and sew ends up

Merino wool socks

Fleece lined overshoes

Toasty warm

Overshoes are crucial. I got mine after following advice elsewhere on Cycle Chat. There are some good threads on it. I cycle the whole year round but for a few days when the snow is thick and compacted when - even in London with plenty of road gritting - discretion is the better part of valour for me (a southern softie).

2+ years, and only commute on a road bike.
Mudguards, warm clothes, gloves, extra socks, and a lot of care when it is cold. I keep on salted roads when there is a frost around. In the snow, I took the train until the cars had made tracks in the road, and then cycled.
Standard tyres and no cold-weather modifications to the bike.

no change in gear or bike.. in the winter I add an extra layer, also use an Altura jacket rather than the cheapo Lidl job when its a bit colder..

The seasons here dont justify any major changes other than lights.....makes me laugh when people talk about winter hacks...just an excuse to spend money.

Not necessarily..come try commuting up here, North of Inverness, at the moment......or you could take the car!

However, I commute on the same bike all year round, but do have two wheelsets so that I can put the studded tyres on quickly when the snow and ice come
