Might give it a go. Got a great load of it growing nearly taller than the house in my garden.

I reckon a custom bamboo frame for £389 is a bargain! (Assuming that the cost of the materials is included in the course.)

I could be wrong but I think that is the price of a weekends course. The frame starts at £1,199 + £550 to make it "road worthy".

That was for a ready-built frame. I've read the article twice now and I think you just pay £389 unless you want to buy the extra bits to make a complete bike.

I just checked the FAQs on their website:

How much does it all cost?

Our workshops cost £389.00 and include all the materials & tools you need to complete a frame.

The only thing that would put me off is the appearance of the hemp cloth used to bind the bamboo pieces together.

Not for me, but I love the comments on the grauniad page!

There are some seriously cynical people on there, I didn't know guardian readers were like that, I thought they were supposed to be lentil eating tree huggers

Just make sure you dont bump into a group of hippy pandas that frame wont stand a chance.

They had a very expensive bamboo-framed bike in the window of Blazing Saddles in Hebden Bridge a couple of years ago. It didn't use the crude hemp-wrap joins. It looked very interesting but it was way too expensive for me.

I saw one on the Dragon ride a few years ago I think the ends of the bamboo tubes were epoxied into carbonfibre lugs on that one.

Saw a bamboo bike at the Bike Show in Birmingham in 2011, and fell in love. Now looking for an excellent excuse not to go on this course.

I was sat today trying to figure out which company to approach and ask whether they'd like to be the basis of the assignment for my Entrepreneurial Marketing module, which has 200+ students starting on Monday

I've approached Bamboo Bikes - partly 'cos I met them last year and partly 'cos it's different. Hopefully they'll agree - they get the IP of 200 students' ideas for a very small amount of input.
