I'd like to use a bar bag on my bike to give additional capacity over the Carradice saddlebag for short tours/long Audaxes. However, I have Tiagra STIs (actually, STI in my line of work means 'sexually transmitted infections', but that's bye the bye); does anyone have any bag suggestions that overcomes the problem of cables being in the way?

Cheers all.

I have the Edinburgh Cycles Revolution bar bag (actually it is a Vaude Road I but the same as the ERC one). Nice and small, fits fine with the cables pushed slightly to one side

ERC seem not to list it any more, but the Vaude is available if you hunt hard. I love the fact that it is not as huge as the Ortlieb ones and it comes with a great map holder

I've got one of the carridice bags with tiagra sti's, it pushes the cables put the way a little but has no effect and all works fine.

Cranky's right. And Campag 10-speed ergos work perfectly with Shimano 8-speed transmissions. But it's an expensive solution, even if you don't switch over to Campag throughout.

Another fix some have used is to put brake noodles in the gear cable runs so that the cables run down away from STI levers immediately.

...or upgrade to some of the latest Shimano STI kit which has the cables routed along the bars instead of 'clotheslines'.

Decathlon do a cheapie that fits behind the cables

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's very small.

For the same quality, Campag Ergos are cheaper than Shimano STIs... for Shimano 9 speed you can use either 11 speed Ergos, or the 10 speed ones if you use the "hubbub" modification ( a very slight change to cable routing in the mech )

Switch to bar end shifters and whatever stand alone aero levers are cheap.

Just to spite the Shimano arms race.

Cheers guys. I'll have a look at that Altura bag. Re: the Shimano arms race - I have to confess I'm a big fan of SRAM, and have Rival on my 'best' (i.e. racing/sportive) bike, but the Scott I use for winter/audax came with Shimano & I can't afford to change it - otherwise it'd be SRAM again (Apex this time with 12 - 32 on the back, compact in front).

Hi, I couldn't get the Altura bag to fit on my Giant Defy bars with STIs. No way. Bag's on my hybrid shopper now!
