I used to have a bar end light (RHS only) that stuck out six inches and was red flashing/steady at rear and white flashing/steady to front. Can't remember the name of it now but it was good until I broke it.

Not quite. The light unit (which I still have) was on the end of a five inch rubber extension (obviously for straight bars rather than road bars) and this is the bit I broke.

Surely the 2 little LEDs in that first pic will be completely obscured by the rider's arms and body.

That thought occurred to me last night. I've got a Cateye Opticube and it has sideways lighting as well, but if mounted on the bars, any sideways light is hidden by hands and arms. Makes me wonder how important sideways lighting is.

The Danlight? A quick google doesn't seem to find a direct link to it...

Yeah, I can't see a website from google... It was on a stalk, yeah, and you could push it in for storage or to prevent knocks...?

I had some rear facing LED ones designed for drop bars. Not greatly effective IMHO as with the angle of the drops on my winter bike/hack they pointed down towards the area where the rear wheel was, and I'm fairly certain couldn't be seen that well at a distance from behind. Siddways facing orange LED's would be interesting though, but maybe only on flash - wheel reflectors from the side work but in part becuas of the rotation of the wheel.
