bar tape question

Can anyone tell me what lm doing wrong here? l bought Brooks bar tape thinking it would be the right stuff for my Carlton but the end plug won't even fit without the tape tucked in as per the photo. Am l missing a trick or two?

Modern handlebars are slightly bigger than the ones on older bikes, can you not re-use the old end plugs, plus the Brooks tape is overpriced compared to the proper stuff,

BTW red looks best on a green bike (or at least that's what is on my green Carlton.

Free end plugs are shoot anyway. A pair of BBB BHT-96 are worth it and fitted in my 1983 (AFAIK) SR bars.

My bar end plugs have a screw and an expander, Milremo or copies would look nice

There you go, l knew l should ask first and buy second. Unfortunately there were no end plugs in the bars when l got the bike.Oh well back to the drawing board ! I must admit l don't really like the Brooks tape, it is very thick and a bit stiff, probably be a pain to put on successfully .

Personally I'd use Velox Tressostar cloth tape, but there again I am a bit behind the times lol
