Bog standard cork tape, what ever is cheap and not too awful a colour.

Fancy all singing and dancing tapes that offer squirmy/spongy/tacky or what ever finshes just make you reliant on them as you think you need them to avoid injury, it's causing you to fret about something as simple as bar tape which should not be a worry at all.

Let your hands toughen up and just say no to over priced bar tape.

Horribly inflexible going round the brake levers, not at all stretchy, easy to break trying to get it to fit neatly; and in case you are wondering I have put bar tape on quite a number of bikes in the last few years. The Cinelli cork was even worse than Halfrauds own-brand stuff.
I have found that it can dry out and go off making it behave how you describe.

Some shops have boxes of the stuff floating around for years - make sure it's fresh.

If your a fan of the LA artist Mike Giant then you could get Cinnelli bar tape and matching gloves

Some bar tape I would not recommend is Botranger

You seriously do have a problem.

Bar tape goes off.

Now run along now and play with your Stanley Ratcheting screwdriver.

Run along now and play?

As someone who has lots and lots of experience of fitting bar tape old and new and has recently installed some vintage twenty year old Cinelli bar tape I'm confident that you are talking out of your arse.

Again.

My personal advice;

1) Cinelli cork, I have used it since the 80s. It is the best. It stretches well (as long as you pull it gently with about 30cm of tape outstretched, shorter = more break prone).

2) If you want more comfort, double-wrap with two tapes, using cotton tape for the base. Alternatively Cinelli gel tape works well.

3) Dont get white ! It looks terrible very quickly. If however you decide on white, keep it clean with weak bleach solution and a small brush.

4) Always warm the tape (on a radiator, etc), before wrapping.

5) Start the wrap at the bar ends, going outside in (i.e. right bar is anti-clockwise.

6) If you want a discreet finish, don't use the finishing tape supplied (garish) , electrical insulation tape wrapped tightly looks good if done properly.
