Hi All,

A newbie very dumb question I know!

But having taken delivery of these:

Merino Longsleeve Zipneck Baselayer M_190 Blue Extra Large
Vaeon Roubaix Padded Bib Tight Black Extra Large

I am not certain if the Merino Baselayer should go under or over the bib trousers. I am certain it looks better if the baselayer is over the bib's but is that OK? Bearing in mind I have not bought a 'jumper' only a hi vis waterproof jacket.

Thanks for helping this newbie!

Regards

Chris

im a little tea pot
I layer with base layer, then bibs then jersey. Keeps me toasty warm!

Wear it as you like but personally base layer under the bibs and top layer over. If its just one layer during the summer. over the top. But that's all just on a comfort (padding under the bib straps) and looks basis so wear it as you like.

Under is best. Think toilet stops.

Also if your waterproof jacket is not breathable you'll not be riding inn it for long. A windproof soft shell is what you really want.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice. I will wear the vest under and I have a gillett running jacket that I have been wearing which I reckon I will still put on top.

Hi Vam,

Just thought about the toilet stops whilst walking the dog!!

Jacket is breathable:

Wore it under on the commute to work, with the little gillet on top which keeps the belly hidden!!

Worked very well.

As a general rule layers which you don't take off go under bibs, layers which you do take off go over the top. So say I had jacket, jersey, windproof layer, base layer. The jacket & jersey would go over the bibs, the windproof layer & base layer would go under the bibs.

Depends on the weather tbh, sometimes I can not take the base layer for long (I get too hot, I am always being asked if I am cold or if I am carrying waterproofs when I ride in shorts and a jersey when others are in long sleeves and leg warmers etc) and it has to come off, in which case I tend to wear it over the bibs so I can remove it.

If it is freezing and no chance it is coming off, then under the bibs.

Basically convenience rules!

If I was going to wear a jersey and a jacket, I wouldn't be wearing a base layer most likely, because I would cook. I ride in shorts and jersey in all but the most extreme situations. I really do not feel the cold like the average person it seems.

If you're riding at a decent effort level that would see you dripping in sweat at 25-30C you need to be dripping with sweat when it's cold else you're unduly stressing your muscles.
