I'm sure everyone has had this at some point or another. But this has got to be the worst I have ever encountered it. After 20 miles yesterday my self and riding buddie plan to head out for 20 or 30 miles today. We are both on road bikes and taking advantage of the cap in the terrible weather. Anyway the question is.
Is there away to avoid the second day sore backside? It's not saddle sores more like bruised sit bones.
Isn't there away to avoid this? I have in the past battled on and aventually the area softens up again. I'm not keen on it though lol my mate is the same. I am hopping that in time this will disappear but truth is I'm out once or twice a week and still struggling. P.s the seat is set properly and is the correct size.

Do I sit on a raw stake when I get back in? Hahaha

Soreness and bruising after only 20 miles suggests to me something's wrong somewhere - unless you're a complete beginner. Maybe try a different saddle, I tried a few before I settled on San Marco Rolls for all my bikes. Sudocreme might also help a little. And maybe try shorts with a different pad?

That was the other thing I'm currently wearing Lycra running leggings padded shorts are on the cards. I used to ride massively for about 5 years and got back into it after 4 years out. So I have been back for over year now. If I'm honest I never used padded shorts before and had no problems :s I'm miffed. I will see how I get Keith the shorts when they arrive I was just wondering if anyone els suffered.

Thanks for your reply though

You are wearing padded cycle shorts, next to the skin, aren't you?

Can you post a pic of the bike on here? Bruised bottom can be caused by having the saddle incorrectly angled or it may be that you need a different saddle or just more time in the saddle. It will get better with time. What saddle is it?

Edit: padded shorts will make a big difference. Come back on here if they don't.

Last years specialized riva. It came with the bike. I have the saddles nose in the air a bees wing from level.
As I say in an earlier reply at the moment I'm not wearing padded shorts although i have never needed them before (when I was alot younger)

Shorts now.

You do need them for longer rides. Your ar$e will harded up - the problem is you aren't riding enough at the minute (frequency) so this spouts of extra miles will make you suffer.

Keep at it and get some shorts.

It is amazing you your bum does get used to the saddle. I use a Charge Knife and despite the unfortunate name, my biggest concern now on long rides is shoulder muscles and pins and needles in my hands. I don't even think about my bum!

Definitely go for padded shorts and remember to wear them commando...might seem a bit unnatural at first but they'll soon feel like a second skin

Good news boys. It wasn't as bad as I thought. My mate never managed out today so went to see the folks. Had to head back earlier than I would of liked because light was running short but 15 miles and I plan on heading out tommorow  still going to get the shorts though. Thanks to all

I had a bout of out of the blue saddle soreness and it ended up being a rough and badly finished seam in my shorts. If you get any hot spots down below it's definitely worth checking for roughly finished seams.

As the others said. Just avoid sitting on raw stakes .
I'm all good now I have padded shorts on order and my mileage/bottom seamed to be fine on today's ride. I'm trying to focus on slow twitch muscles in order to increase my range for up coming events I intend to partake in. So the longer I can take in the saddle the better just now  and the raw stake thing... It works for black eyes. So I've herd, not had one my self :secret:

when i got my first road bike i didn't have padded shorts and after 2 weeks i literally couldn't sit in the saddle without crying. I got the padded shorts and it felt like heaven! The fact that the saddle was the wrong size also didn't help but the padded shorts helped immensely. Which was a good job coz it was another two years before i discovered that you could buy a different saddle LOL! (when i discovered the local bike shop... a better alternative to Halfords)
