How do other routes that go through disused tunnels manage nesting bats. Although there are two tunnels here so I can't see why they don't just open one and leave the other for the bats.

Bats are strongly protected, I would imagine there would be loads of bureaucracy to wade through for any organisation wishing to affect their roosting sites.

Large [and I do mean large] civil engineering projects are put on hold for bats [and other wildlife]. As one of the main arguments for cycling is it's 'green' credentials then not much to do really.
