I am finding that my fixed, Pearson Touche, is getting through a BB in about 12 months, on my Dawes Giro I am getting several years from a BB. I have noticed that all the last 3 bikes I have brought have gone through their original BB's in about 12 months, and with all but the Pearson the replacement BB's have lasted several years

...Deleted... Just realised I posted almost the same thing previously.

I once had a Shimano UN72 last me 40,000 miles (hard touring, rough stuff type miles too). I don't think that's an unreasonable life expectancy.

The old UN52s lasted a fraction of that, but the current Shimano UN54s should last a long time.

Recently installed an FSA Gossamer chainset with an external FSA BB to my 'cross bike. It was awfult. After one ride I took it out and refitted my UN54 and Stronglight compact. Much better.

(that UN54 has now been on 3 different bikes).
