BB Recommendations plz

Can anyone recommend me a decent 68mm square taper BB, waiting on crank removal tool arriving so I can measure length before purchasing one.

Its for my commuter bike so will be ridden in all weathers, so want one that will last.

Halfords do VP ones with good reviews and price?

Had a look and they no longer do a square taper bracket from what I can see

I use the cheap VP and Neco ones. Normally get around 3k out of them.

You should get an intergalactic mileage out of a good brand like Shimano, about £25.
SJS have a good selection.

Check out Spa cycles. They have a good range.

Shimano UN300 is a good as anything.
Be careful not to cross thread it going in, watch a park tools video.
Lithium grease the threads, and coat the BB shell with regular grease.

it’s for my Giant Rock SE MTB

All I know just now is it’s a square taper 68mm waiting on cranks tool so I can measure length

he won't know until he takes the old one out.

Chances are it will be shimano or shimano equivalent and hence JIS, given its a "relatively" modern bike

you shouldn't need to measure the length - it should have a label on it.

isnt it a quick approximation that a black axle is JIS and a silver one ISO?

They were costly then, and remain so, but my Phil Wood square-taper bottom bracket feels like new after 46 years, without any maintenance whatsoever (they are sealed, lifetime bearings).

All my powder-coater had to do was take it out, and put it back in again afterwards. It's good for another 46 years, I'd bet.

Ok so got my bottom bracket out,

it is 68 x 120. What tolerance Would I get away with if in Length? 117-122?

Halfords have a 117.5 or 122.5 in stock locally

does it say that on the label or have you just measured it? 118 & 122 are more common?

if it does actually say 120 on it either will work its only 1mm out either side to a 122. or you could get a 120mm from spa - ccoule of cheap options but not a UN300
