It doesnt compare to the books. But it's still a good attempt IMO.

Agree with this. The radio series was truly excellent, as are the books.

The TV series was "OK" although not great and the film, well the less said about it the better. It's total rubbish.

I must be in a minority here.

I think it's great.

I enjoyed it, despite thinking I wouldn't. (Didn't see it last night, but seen it before). The radio series, the books and the TV were all so different, seems fair that the film will be too.... I loved the sneaky homages to the TV series.

TBH, I think the last couple of books in the trilogy weren't up to scratch (and I only heard bits of the recent sequel on book at bedtime, and don't feel moved to read it).

Well!

I seem to have already posted on this topic on another thread (the Grow Up one) before I saw this one.

I certainly 'have a view' on this movie having been an ardent HHGG'er since its earliest inception. I've 'done' the radio serial, the BBC TV serial, the books, and the Infocom text game. So it's not surprising that this more recent offering comes bottom of the list. But not by too many light-years!

We went to see the film at the cinema when it first came out a few years ago. I went already expecting most of the subtleties, the satirical wit of the UK versions to be absent, after all this is a film primarily for a US audience with different tastes. So I wasn't all that surprised or disappointed.

It was surprising to notice, watching the broadcast last night, how much I missed at the cinema. I'd never noticed that the original 'Marvin' of the TV serial puts in a brief appearance in this film (he's on the Vogon planet). Glad to see you Marvin! Would have been nice if they'd let you reprise your role in the entire film, instead of that absurd ball-headed* oaf, but perhaps there were copyright reasons...

The SFX have moved a long way since the 1980s. Worth watching just for that.

*was it meant to be some sort of "brain-the-size-of-a-planet" reference? If so it was lost on me...

Did you also spot (from my memory of seeing it a few years ago now), Simon Jones as the voice of Magrathea, and the portrait of Douglas on the teacup/saucer?

For my money, Life the Universe and Everything (#3 in the series) was the best of the bunch, hangs together plot-wise better than any of the others and has some brilliant gags.

Undecided about So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (#4). Maybe there was some sense in slipping a rom-com into the series at this point, even though it seems out-of-character with the rest and comes as rather a jolt. The plot is a bit slow-moving but then, in Real Life, romance can take time to blossom!

And surely we all recognize Rob McKenna don't we! Lovely man, familiar to all cyclists across the country!

As for Mostly Harmless: well I totally lost the plot with that one. Never finished it. I think the series should have ended before that one.

No. Must play back the video, thanks for the heads-up!
