We went to see the film at the cinema when it first came out a few years ago. I went already expecting most of the subtleties, the satirical wit of the UK versions to be absent, after all this is a film primarily for a US audience with different tastes. So I wasn't all that surprised or disappointed.

Yes, but all that aside, the characterisation and acting were crap. Especially Ford and Zaphod, the latter being the worst by a country mile - was that fake head the best they could do? Come on!! That alone ruined it for me.

I agree: the 'two heads' were unconvincing to say the least, but perhaps they didn't want to repeat the big mistake of the TV serial, where that was probably the weakest feature of the series:

The fake head was an animatronic puppet but apparently it didn't work too well, and a lot of the time the second head was totally inactive and lifeless when it was supposed to be doing something. Apparently there was at times a puppeteer crouched behind Zaphod to operate the 'head' with wires, as well as providing Zaphod's third arm: taking care to keep out of camera, but that can't have been easy!
