A great way to get a grasp of foreign languages. I learnt Japanese this way for the most part.

I have started using subtitles most of the time. When I can adjust the size and font to make them subtle, that is fine. I have had platforms that insist on using bright fluorescent colours to distinguish between characters though, and that is really distracting!

Another gripe... AI-generated subtitles. I have had several cases recently where the AI repeatedly got it spectacularly wrong. I turned the subtitles off.

A friend round for TV night recently refused to let me switch the subtitles on for characters mumbling in strong accents, but then insisted that I turn the volume up.

I wouldn't have guessed that. I'm not good at multitasking so if I read subtitles I tend to not be able to grasp what's going on. I find it easier to listen to annoyingly bad dubbing

Film dialogue sound is tailored to cinema playback and totally unsuited to the appalling audio quality provided by flat screen TVs. The sound quality in cinemas isn't that much better BTW.

Plausible but doesn't explain inaudible speech in TV series.

I haven't watched a television in my flat for almost seven years, but when I did watch TV I'd have the subtitles on as it was better than having the volume too loud to hear what was being said, plus when reading words it improves your mind I'd say. The only times I didn't have subtitles on was during live sports programs where the typed words were way behind the verbal commentary and quite often words that were misspelled or nowhere near to what the spoken words were.
