Be careful when using ATM machines folks!

Not an ATM but we were walking to the pub when a group of lads said to me "have you got the time mate" I told them to fark off and Maz went mad at me...................Until I pointed out that we were 50 yards from the 'Clocktower' I think they expected me to get a mobile phone out so they could grab it

I went to my bank today to ask if my card had been found in the ATM I was using. It hadn't been found in there, so it was definitely stolen yesterday! I asked if the police had asked to see their cctv footage of outside the bank that covers their ATM's. They told me they hadn't, which is quite disappointing as if they'd looked at the cctv coverage at the time it happened they'd have seen the theft taking place and might've known who the thief is.

I am paranoid about ATMs and if anyone gets close to me when I'm using one they be get a dirty look then if they're still near me I leave the machine with my card. I walk away but check what they do next. If they use the machine I relax if they walk away a bit then follow someone else in I'll look for another machine. I'm incredibly security conscious when the odd times I get cash out.

There are some scumbags around. I know an office working female go to her private, company carpark in a certain city and got into her car. Before she could shut the door a big guy was on her trying to grab her bag. She then started kicking the guy whilst holding onto the bag. The guy got a quite literal kicking until his mate came from the side and punched her. They got the bag but she had her phone and called the police and bank. The cards were cancelled in minutes and they got arrested shortly after. Known snatch types so an easy detect I think.

In another country someone I know got robbed at knife-point. She called a colleague who walked the same route but a bit later in the day. Didn't catch him but heard the next day they tried it on with that guy, a Scot. Apparently he nutted the mugger and the others found it funny so didn't help and he got away.

I had self defence lessons at my old martial arts dojo by someone who used to teach it in the army. A seventh Dan too. He said the key thing about self defence is to be aware of your surroundings and who's around. After that just don't be there. If you can run away, if not do whatever you can to allow you to run away. If you're caught repeat until you are no longer there.

I think the key thing is to make sure you know what cards are in your wallet and have the bank security numbers for all banks you have them with. It is better to lock cards ASAP. A thief walked casually and unafraid into the offices of a place I worked and walked into a senior manager's office. He left with his wallet. Then he went 10 minutes down the road and bought alcohol with the card. The manager was away from his desk and only found out it was nicked a few hours later. There was enough alcohol bought to have a few parties with.

It's a world we have to be aware of risks and be aware of the best and latest advice on keeping safe. Both for our own physical health but also financial. And even at home you're not safe with online fraud. I know a senior exec at work who told us he got caught out by a scam. Apparently it occurred over 3 days and was so plausible. This is a guy who's got good strategic thinking skills and earn his senior position through intelligence and ability. Not someone you'd think was at risk of scams.

If you need cash probably better to get as a casback transaction in a shop. Its ages since I used cash. Have a couple of notes in the wallet which I assume are still legal!

Good luck finding someonemin a business of any size who is authorised and able to access the CCTV then and there. Small shops weren't bad for it, but bigger businesses such as fast food joints, banks, big name shops, it often be the case that only one person had access to the system and they were on holiday in Tumbuktu. Or even worse, only Fred from regional head office can do it but it's their policy not to do so for people in trilbys.

It wasn't so bad in the old days when you could just seizenthe videocassette and view it at your leisure, but since digital systems started appearing in 00's there are pass codes and the like.

I met a pal at a little bar in Todmorden yesterday. The owner only charged £1 for a can of Coke but that was the cash price. She apologised about preferring cash but said that her bank charged 20p for each digital payment. I don't carry cash these days so I paid her £1.20 digitally instead.

She asked what I would do if the bank's computers got hacked so digital payments went down? I said that I wouldn't be able to get the cash from an ATM either!

Do places still accept cash? Tried to donate to a street charity a month ago and they refused. Didn't want to be carrying cash.

Perhaps ATM's are the only place where thieves know there will be cash. Everywhere I go, it's cards not cash.

Side street chippy in Windermere only takes cash, has no facilities for taking any other method, and has a notice up giving the reasons, and no, it isn’t to dodge tax, but as he says mainly, a day’s card charges are equivalent to a day’s wages for an assistant. I can think of a few other places where cards are turned away.

The chip shop I go to won't accept card transactions for the same reasons. Even though there's signs all over the plaice place saying so, folk still order food then find they can't pay by card when they offer one as payment. If they haven't any cash on them the owner points them in the direction of a nearly ATM, but some can't be bothered to walk to it, so the owner then has wrapped up food that usually ends up being binned or given away, like today when my dog was given sausage and gravy!
