OK, so my commute is approx 15.5 to 20 miles each way, and the shortest route basically involves the 60mph A36 south of Bath, complete with cars, lorries and all manner of madness that brings with it.

I tend to ride as much as possible, and have reasonable lights (2 x Fenix Torch L2D's on the front with 2 Smart 1/2 watts and a 1 watt on the back), and I carry a Endura waterproof jacket in case it gets nasty.

I have been toying with the idea of trying to ride through the winter rather than jumping in the truck when it is hammering down, but were I to do so then I would need to take the longer route and keep off that A36 for safetys sake - so in effect I would be committing to two 1hr 30 min rides a day in the dark and wet...
If I decide to cycle through the worst, I am pretty much decided on upgrading my front lights by adding a high power middle light, and will probably look to add more to my back too.

Does anyone here undertake that kind of commute through the worst of the weather, how do you motivate on a very dark and rainy morning, and is there a point where riding simply isnt sensible?

I don't do that distance - namely about 10 miles each way but do ride all weathers. You need a safe route when its icy or snow - I am lucky to have an off road route as an alternative to using roads.

My commute in only 9 miles each way, but I do do it in all weathers...

I don't struggle too much with motivation, but take a kind of perverse pleasure in riding in the worst possible conditions... I also quite enjoy the looks on people's faces when they say "you rode today!"

Only very very rarely to I wimp out and catch the bus.

At the moment where I'm working we have a spare room.

So my kit right now is over the back of some chairs next to a plug in heater in the spare room... I check it's not on fire at regular intervals...

We're moving office next week though, so not sure what I'll do then! My boss is fairly understanding, so hopefully I'll be able to sort something out...

our office is a 3 room affair, I guess I could make a drip tray and hang stuff to dry... just have to sort a spare corner

(I carry the bike up three floors and stand it down one side of a room, so guess I can drip dry stuff off the frame if nothing else)

I think it would be madness to commit to that commute on a daily basis. If it were me I would try to do it maybe 1 or 2 days a week during the winter, days when the weather was not too bad and then return to riding more days of the week in the spring as the days lengthen and weather hopefully improves. As you say, it increases the danger and the time taken and the impact on the rest of your life is too high IMO

do you have a way of drying kit out at work?

Pants and socks on the top of my computer, jersey and shorts over my bike. Waterproofs make you wetter. As for bad weather, I have a single speed ;)

Radiator or a desk fan. Rig something up in a corner, or under a desk, hang kit from clothes hangers and a desk fan drying them.

Radiator only any use in winter in our building. Shoes - newspaper, or best, waterproof overshoes.

Had no trouble with 3 winter commutes. The only time i have used the car is when its sheet ice and thick snow.Other than that i just ride a lot slower and keep to gritted roads wher possible

That's a long commute and on those roads! A brave man.
Mine's a 5-mile each way but nearer 8 when he ice n snow hit.
Some days it's not too bad through the traffic trying to anticipate icy spots.
Fun in the heavy snow as I am faster than most cars on my MTB and as long as I stay on main gritted(ish) routes.

I try and ride sensibly, and to be honest drivers tend to be more considerate on the A36 than they are on minor roads, that said I know it only takes one not to pay attention...

What is this tread you talk of? ;)
