any point in switching from the 700x23c to some 700x25c for the winter months?

Nope, ice will take down anything other than studded tyres. I commute all year round on 23mm, and not extra 'p' fairy protected ones. You don't need tread other than on a MTB off road.

I did commute during the winter a bit for the last 2 years, but this year I am trying to get my head around doing it every day...

The distances aren't a problem, regularly ride long distance and commute it most days in the good weather (whenever that is!).

It is that mindset of look there is my nice shiny truck...

On the bike all year round. Part of commute is on a 70 dual carriageway.
I do not ride if there's been a hard overnight frost or if there's thick fog.

Im planning to commute all winter. My journey isn't too long at a little over 7 miles each way, but most of it is unlit country roads, with little shelter from the elements so it'll be challenging. Fog, frost, snow (so long as its passable) will be faced and dealt with as it comes.

I can't wait.

I guess the only hassle I have is the lack of facilities at my office, but I manage ithe hot weather so I am sure I can manage in the wet

Yep. 20 miles each way for me too in all weathers. The only time i didnt do it last winter was in the worst of the snow/ice but still had a 5 mile ride the other end of the train!

Its perfectly do-able as long as you have the right kit!

I did 11 - 17 mile each way commutes last winter but only 2 or 3 days a week. Keep warm and watch out for ice (I came off and broke my elbow), otherwise it's good fun.
