Minimise heat build up in the house during day with blinds or curtains. This heat rises to the first floor and gets stuck there during the night. Just opening a single window at nigjt is of little benefit if there's no air flow, so try and get an air flow through the room. Also spread yourself out to maximise the surface area of your body across which the air flows in order to improve heat dissipation.

I have opened my loft hatch. It lets the warm air rise. My bedroom is definitely cooler with the hatch open.
I also keep the bedroom blind shut all day so that it stays cooler.

If your roofspace is insulated at ceiling level and you have a vented roof and you have loft hatch try wedging it open by a an inch or so, this will set up a 'stack effect' where the airflow over the roof of your house creates positive and negative pressure drawing air through the roof space which vents warm air out of your house, providing you have windows on night vent in rooms you want to cool.... or ensure you have cross ventilation through the house.

Try lifting your loft hatch now to feel whether there is adequate ventilation... you should notice the draught.

Shading is best done on the outside to prevent the heat getting into the house to start with.

I currently have a fan blowing directly at me. Can't really be good blowing dirty air into my nose etc,

Can't open door as need privacy and it's too loud downstairs.

Anyone else struggle to sleep in this heat?

We aim our fan so that the cool air hits the wall and bounces off over our bed that way we get a steady stream of cool air rather than a full blast on the face

Ceiling fans terrify me. They are just waiting for the moment I take my eyes of them for a second whereby they will leap on me and slice me into a million tiny pieces!

Put the air-con on.....

Ah, bloody air con. Within ten minutes of turning it on in the car my throat is dry and my nose is running like a tap, I only use it for half an hour a month to keep the system lubricated as advised in the handbook. My local Aldi has the air con turned up so high sometimes I have to come out because I can't stop coughing and sneezing. I hate the things.

Open windows and close curtains or blinds to shut out sunlight.

A ceiling fan above the bed (proper one, not one of those carp B&Q efforts) or standing at the end of the bed is verrry nice indeed.

Open the loft hatch to allow warm air to rise.
