Hiya , I'm am thinking of joining either the CTC or British Cycling for the benefits of insurance etc , also joining in their group rides , are they both on parr or is one better than the other ?

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I wouldn't touch BC with a bargepole - they're a bunch of wannabe racers. CTC are going through a rough patch but are still a more open organisation.

I'm not interested in local group rides. Equally, I wouldn't want to go out with others without being reasonably sure they had 3rd party insurance.

+1 for ctc here, I have no interest in races or sportive other than local time trials. I was bc once, but I grew out of it.
Magazine is passable for a freebie, local group ride is supposed to be good, but the insurance and legal cover is the main benefit for me

BC if your planning to race, IMO CTC does more for ordinary everyday cycling so is my choice, can't comment on their group rides though, never been on one,

CTC here. As imperfect as they are and infuriating as they can be I don't feel like an utter spode because I'm not 8 stone and don't turn up to group rides on the latest plastic tool like my one.period of membership with British Cycling. The CTC seem more tolerant of diversity in terms of ages, the type of riding you do etc.

LCC is a further option for cover, depends if you like their politics and activism

Personally I'm with BC (not least as I have an ongoing personal injury claim being handled by their lawyers), the discounts come in handy

I don't race, never will, nor will I join a club or group rides...which is why I have their more appropriately named 'Ride' cover which gives me legal and third party indemnity

I am involved in the local LCC committee but I'm not actually a member

If it's important to you, choose the organisation that suits your politics, otherwise choose the one that provides your required cover for whatever type of riding you want to do

Actually, your diversity comment is another reason I joined ctc too. I reckon a BC group ride might not appreciate me rolling up on my bent for a group ride, although I'm willing to be corrected on this as its purely anecdotal.
Local ctc seem to have a more the merrier approach to it.
