Well reminded, Sir. CTC do half price membership for registered carers, which is handy if you're a registered as a carer. Which I is. Very nice of them.

Search CTC for a local AFFILIATED to CTC club and see what they offer - you can then have CTC Affiliate membership for about half the ridiculously poor value full membership. Or the LCC insurance for £9.50 pa ......

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Really? They've spent a lot of time and money developing their offer to those who aren't racers.
Really. BC is "The internationally recognised governing body of cycle sport in the UK.". CTC is "The national cycling charity".

BC's mission is "to deliver international sporting success, grow and effectively govern cyclesport and inspire and support people to cycle regularly." Note the order.

By contrast, "CTC’s vision is of a healthier, happier and cleaner world, because more people cycle. We want people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to be able to cycle safely, easily and enjoyably."

I think a description of BC as "wannabe racers" (and actual racers, which is even further from my interest) is pretty accurate, don't you?

My Cycling Ireland membership cost me £58 + club fees on top. The cheapest CI membership is still £34.

Be thankful you have a choice..
Doesn't the CTC extend to Northern Ireland? Or is it Great Britain only? (excuse my ignorance, and apologies if my question steps on any toes)

There are a number of CTC affiliated clubs, but the same clubs are also Cycling Ireland affiliated which requires club members to also be a member.

BC and CTC membership offer none of benefits here as the UCI deem Cycling Ireland to be federation for the Island, north and south, that means race and leisure licenses, insurances etc etc can only be provided by CI.

Who, me ?
Might I suggest that you have a trial rideout with both your local CTC and BC groups and join whichever organisation represents the group you felt most comfortable with. This assuming that the insurance and stuff from both groups mets your needs.

Another possible factor: Are the available discounts useful? I've read on here of a handy Halfords discount that comes with BC. I think there are similar discounts from CTC but I have no idea what.

If you have a bike purchase planned this may be significant.

(I'm a CTC member btw - as this is a necessary adjunct to being a member of the Fridays. I have no knowledge of the BC/CTC tribal debate)

Only if you believe that BC exists solely for the racing - which it clearly doesn't.

It's really quite clear what form of cycling comes first in their mindset, isn't it? If it makes you happy for me to say, "yes, of course @User, you're right - BC doesn't exist solely for the racing", then I'm happy to say it.

Can you say which ones? As far as I know, the insurance cover is the same and the only difference seems to be you don't get the magazine.

When I considered saving a few quid by going down the Affiliate route, I was informed by someone at CTC that Affiliate memership only covered third party insurance claims, I am on unwaged membership so the saving wasn't worth changing, I am glad I continued with full membership as I have now a claim ongoing after being knocked off.

I dd not look into if what i was told was correct.

This ^^ is incorrect

I was an associate member and had a claim supported by the CTC after an accident, so I think that is wrong advice.

This ^^ is correct

My claim was as an affiliated member and also had full CTC/Slater and Gordon support.

For me, the top priority was finding a group that fitted my personality and my cycling aspirations. I found that with my local CTC group. My recommendation is to try out candidate clubs before you decide which banner to adopt.
