I've mentioned before that once a week (actually once every 9 days because of my work Rota) I have a day off from exercise - no cycling, no gym, nothing more strenuous than a walk with the dog or a gentle stroll to the Vampire and Virgin for a Guinness.

It's something I've always done to give my joints and tendons a rest, and any minor injuries a chance to heal or to abate before they become symptomatic.

To me it just seemed a sensible thing to do, though I've never researched the wiseness of the routine. Does anyone else do this? Is there any science behind it? Am I just turning into a woos?

I'm a great believer in this. But I'm far more committed than you are. I have a tough, professional mentality. I take far more than just one day off a week.

One rest day per week, and one recovery week every four weeks.

That's the standard formula.
Oh good, thanks to work I am still on enforced recovery  Might have to break out the big lights and do a circuit of Bushy Park this evening.

One day off from training is very much a thing in triathlon training plans, at least. I've sometimes even not done my bike commute (which is only 9km, in 4 little sections), so as to have a complete rest day. (I would prefer not to take a rest day at the weekend because that's the time I have time to do long cycles or runs.)

Most modern approaches to training stress the importance of recovery. There are even measures of it if you're into power meters and ting. Look up Acute and Chronic Training Loads and Training Stress Balance while you take a break from internet pornography.

Sleep is my focus at the moment, I really struggle to get six hours. Which hinders recovery.

Agree with the above. Sleep is far more important IMO than taking arbitrary time off from training. Apparently sleep is when the body
produces growth hormone for recovery and repair and testosterone (which has added benefits as you get older!)

I go to the gym and cycle, which I tend to do in three day blocks for both. So the fourth day is a 'rest' day from either cycling or weight training, but this does mean that most days involve cycling and weight training!

I've never really thought about having a rest day, that said my work/family life doesn't allow me to ride more than usually 3x a week, often less. Most days I'll jump on the other bike to the shops/pub/scouts etc but these are slow (with 7yr old usually) short rides that I'd never even really registered as a ride as such

When i have a day off from cycling i spend it working which involves a lot of climbing and carrying stuff. So i don't really have a day off from physical exertion. The last time i had a day off would probably have been last Christmas Day.
