Berwick --> Dunbar

I don't know about South of Dunbar but the John Muir way north of Dunbar is cyclable in some places but in places its not navigable by by bike. That section doesn't even look like a track in places on you're map. According to OpenCyclemap, cycle route 76 takes you from just north of Berwick along the Coast to Dunbar; perhaps you'd be best to join up with that for that section at least.

I know the area adequately as a driver in the area, but have only cycled that stretch once a long time ago. I agree with your assessment, the A1 is not a nice road for a bike. But, I also know that the area to the south is very hilly. I think for this section you are caught between the devil and the sea and personally, I would probably risk it and stick to the A1.

Does anyone know if the path track round the seaward side of the power station is open to the public, can I bike it?

If you mean Torness - I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly there is a good track/path past the front of the station(but it's a few years since I've worked there).

Having just recently cycled from Alnmouth to Edinburgh along NCN1 & 76, I was worried about that stretch too. I can confirm that the stretch by Torness is right alongside the A1. But it's a separate cycle lane, with about a metre or so of grass between it and the A1. Just next to Torness, the cycle lane crosses the A1 via a very large traffic island between the two directions of traffic.
No problem at all, if not the prettiest part of the route

Thanks for that. What puzzles me is that cycle route 76 seems to use 1½miles map link of the A1, including a section past a speed camera where everyone will be too focused on their speedometers to notice somebody on a bike!

According to Sustrans that section of the Route 76 is off road the entire route doesn't seem to touch the A1 when you zoom in which makes sense given it Sustrans that would take you 10 miles out of the way rather than go on a busy road ;) Using Streetview though I'm unsure where it is, perhaps you can ask them.

Edit: Telemark has already answered the question

Beat you to it

I wanted to put in a Streetview link too, but that bit of the A1 must have been photographed AGES ago, the A1 is now a dual carriage way in both direction, + the cycle lane next to the Edinburgh-bound lanes ...

but I found this picture

The path runs along side the A1, not on it...

It is worth make a detour to Dunglass Collegiate Church, I did the trip the other way round a few weeks ago...

This must be very new, it doesnt appear in google street view or microsofts "bing". Glad to see it, didn't fancy cycling on the A1

I think the NCN76 was officially opened a year or two ago. In some places that cycle path next to the A1 already has weeds breaking through the tarmac, so not THAT new ...

On the Sustrans web site they are showing the NCN 76 route between Musselburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed as a "proposed route", however it is shown on the current NCN Coast & Castles South map (published Dec 2008) and on the latest edition of OS sheet 67. On the ground there is signage, but in true Sustrans style it is a wee bit patchy in places, I would recommend taking a map with you.

There is a link to a map of the route we took at the bottom of the blog post I link to above.

Yet on their On Line Map they show the path as there but they put the warning up 'Path Not Open'

That is Sustrans for you, Bloody useless...

The path is there, it is pretty poor, but it is there, it is a typical piece of Sustrans work, they didn't dig the foundations deep enough so there are now weeds coming up through the tarmac. It is passable at present, but give a couple of years and it won't be, what a waste of money...
