A lot of Japanese furniture is surprisingly crude. There's a traditional house in Beautiful Wife's home town and I was surprised to find there's very little furniture and even where there is some, for example in the kitchen, the drawers are nailed together: no dovetails.

Most joinery is used in housebuilding not furniture making.
