Imagine how much they'd have charged you if you'd called someone out! Imagine how annoyed you'd have been to have paid all that money for them to have just tilted it backwards a bit!

Except that they wouldn't have done that; well not initially anyway. Firstly they would have done that sharp intake of breath through the teeth thing accompanied by a slow shake of the head. Then the sad news that you require a replacement (insert choice of part here) which they just happen to have in the van. An hour or so later after some unnecessary dismantling and re-assembly, only THEN would they do the tilt thing; before presenting the bill for £££ .

A few years ago my missus called a bloke out to have a look at our ailing fridge. Very friendly young asian chap turned up. After discussing it for a bit, he said 'is it ok if I give your fridge a bit of a bash?' Having established that he didn't mean anything likely to actually damage it, we said fine, knock yourself out. He wobbled it around a bit, and what do you know, it started working again. He explained that sometimes a bubble gets trapped in the coolant fluid, and stops everything circulating the way it should - dislodge the bubble, and all is well. He said that sometimes with particularly houseproud people he had to kick their fridge after distracting their attention; on one memorable occasion he'd been caught out, and all but thrown off the premises. Refused to take any money - just asked that we keep his card for next time.

We've done loads of repairs using information found on the internets that would otherise have cost us ££££££'s to get repaired.

OH's just repaired my old iphone 4, which went kaput a few months ago. Going to start using it again as the iphone 5c I replaced it with at the time is pants! Wish we'd discovered this at the time!

We had a nice chap from the power shower company come and replace a valve thingy about 6 years ago. They charged a standard fee of £140 for any job no matter what it is - this sounded like a stonking deal so we accepted it.

He was at our house for an absolute maximum, being generous, 20 minutes - and part of that was sorting the invoice and payment.

4 years later it went again and I did some Googling.

New part was £24 delivered and took me 25 minutes to fit.
