Best I've used so far are the Schwalbe Stelvio (wire on, 25C). Still not ideal, but a nice trade off between feel, p* resistance and grip, imo.

I was quite happy with the Conti's but have switched to Michelin TransWorld Sprint road/trail tyres as the Conti's are too hard for crap surfaces in the dark, the Michelins dont roll very well but are very comfy and I can fly across the off road section rather than picking my way through.

1 for conti gators although I'm currently still on Conti GP 4000's as my commute is usually ice/ hazard free and I don't hammer it during the winter.

The poll is meaningless without defining 'best' in this context

best for what, for many it seems to be for punctures but for others that's not the main quality of a tyre

Even then, unless people have used a range of tyres ...

Marathon Plus on the MTB commuter, Stelvio on the road bike.

On my commuter I've got conti contacts (can't remember the exact model) and found them great tyres, they've only had 1 p'ture in 4,900mls none in the last 4,500. I've got other brands of contis on my other bikes too. I used to use spesh for commuting Nimbus Armadillos they offer a similar p record but found them too skitish. I had other Spesh tyres for a while too and found them likewise.

Best defined as
value (eg ok if there £30 as long as they can clock up the miles) - durability (eg lack of punctures etc)- Speed + Grip (you gotta get to work and in one piece!)

Specialized All condition Armadillo. Once cycled about half a mile wondering what the 'click' was (thought something was caught in the spokes) before the tyre deflated. 3/4 inch screw took a screwdriver to get out again and the tip had only just penetrated the puncture-protection.

I have to agree with Tynan. "Best" is pretty vague. I like the Conti Sport Contact. They last a long time, roll well, grip well, but puncture resistance is only so-so. HOWEVER...my commute is all on hard surface, and not many puncture-creating obstacles. If my commute included gravel, or dirt paths, or back alleys, I'm sure I'd prefer a different tyre. I hear many good things about Schwalbe Marathons, and the Gatorskins, and, perhaps if they made them in a slick, I'd be interested, but for MY commute, I really don't need all that tread.
