May I suggest Helsinki. Fabulous city. :becool:

Another vote for Helsinki, great place. Fabber's choice of Stockholm too - beer's a shocking price in both, bit of a drawback but hey-ho...

Helsinki is not the cheapest city I know, I stayed there for a while, but it's well worth it imo. Also, you can get the overnight Silja Line ferry and have a day in Stockholm :becool:

the cost of beer should really influence your choice - unless you are loaded you wont be able to afford to get pissed in Stockholm or Helsinki which would spoil my weekend! These places along with Tallinn, Riga, Krakow etc. can be ridiculously cold in winter too so bear that in mind too.

Another vote for Valencia. Fabulous place, although when you see all of the Calatrava buildings you wonder how they didn't manage to bankrupt themselves years ago. Also, don't go during Fallas if you intend to sleep at any point.

Some alternatives

Stockholm
Florence
Toledo (Spain)
Santander (if only to visit the Guggenheim)
Is Istanbul too far - very different culture/food etc.

Riga is supposed to be good too.
Guggenheim= Bilbao surely? scene of my stag-do - a great city also

a wild card might be A Coruna - been there a couple of times and it's not so big, but really nice, some great food. Oh and Gijon is tremendous fun, had some great nights there.

My brother lives in Valencia so we've been there too many times for us to consider that one. Venice is out due to the fact I wouldn't be able to remain somewhere when you can get into the Dolomites by driving two hours north! And it does have to be a city. There have been some very good shouts here so thanks to all contributors so far.

No, it was a unanimous vote from more than 50 people over five days (a company kick-off meeting) and the biggest complaints came from our American contingent. To get something palatable, we would sneak out at lunchtime and go to McDonalds, THAT'S how bad we found the grub. And we didn't get a decent beer either, as I recall. For January though, the weather was warm and sunny.
You must have gone to the wrong places. I had great food and wine when I went there.

Seville, late night City, plenty of street life, no extortionate prices for enjoying yourself, food, drink or accommodation etc. I dream about that City. I am taking my good lady in March, she hasn't been and is sick of me banging on about it. I'll have us living there one day, you'll see.........

Disagree about Barcelona crime, I am lucky to have pal there so I go 3 or 4 times a year. It is extremely safe, far safer than bleedin Leeds and I spend most of my time drunk in La Raval! Violent crime is extremely rare, petty crime is rife, but crime follows the tourist hoards, away from Las Ramblas, Picasso museum and Sagrada Familia etc Then IMO it is super safe.
