Best European city for weekend break?

My 4 favourite Euro cities for short breaks.
Hamburg
Berlin
Lisbon
Madrid

All cracking great places for a short break.
Of course Lisbon and Madrid would be a bit warmer.

Interesting set of responses overall. Lots of Spanish cities, quite a few for Italian cities, Germany and Scandinaviclearly have their fan, but very few votes for places in France. I wonder what the reason for that is: over-familiarity, not exotic enough?

I think Valencia did bankrupt itself - and is taking Spain with it!

Agree - it is fantastic though.

Grenada or Seville are nice - Seville is lovely, probably has more night life and I believe is has warmest climate in Europe.

Yes, that wasn't very clear. I meant it was surprising how long they'd taken to go bankrupt! Calatrava shut down his entire Valencia office at the beginning of the year. It's pretty striking when Spain's most celebrated architect can't sustain an office in his home town.

Seville is a good choice too, especially in Feb/March.

Sadly Cleethorpes really is the last resort!.
Always found Athens a good place for a short break, at the moment though you may find yourself on the barricades with the locals!
How about Marrakesh, nice weather and lots to see.

Lots of good music venues too, we got it wrong in the first place we went to, dreadful pretentious up their own jacksies jazzers but ended up in a great bar with an excellent blues band.

That's kinda why we went, had air-miles aplenty and I travelled there a lot on business, so when Mrs FF asked me where I wanted to go, Chicago to listen to blues and visit the museums was top of the list!
The Blue 'Chicago' bars on Clarke are great, Buddy Guys is OK and I never made it to Kingston Mines which is supposed to be THE place. We went to a good Jazz place too, but can't remember the name. Another time I hope.

Berlin does seem to close to becoming the cool Eurocity of the moment, one great advantage is that you can get a gourmet coffee without any prams or baby buggies around you ....
Cycling's meant to be good there too.

I'm not arguing with you Mort, Bruges is a wonderful place, even the nats in the Hotel Martn's Relais bit us lovingly. After all it's moules, frites and Belguim humour are renowned. ( this is my Italian side coming out, no offence to any Italians).

I can reccomend Cologne for a weekend away. Plenty to see and do. Easy to get to by Eurostar, change at Brussels, or flight to Cologne/Bonn.
Also Strasburg, another lovely city.
