West Yorkshire Police Vauxhall Cavalier SRi
by John Berry, on Flickr (no idea why it's got balloons attached though...)

I had a Mk2 Cavalier (the special edition Commander, not the SRi, sadly) and it was superior in every way to the rival Ford Sierra - faster, better handling, better looking, easier to steal...
In fact, if I could have any of my old cars back it would be the Cavalier, even over the Mk2 Escort

Bet the UK plod loved it when the Hot Hatch RD Cosworth came along and were getting nicked suddenly they started being given cars specced to try and keep up RS200?

Those Cosworths were seriously quick. I used to know a bloke who worked on the police helicopter years ago. He told me a tale about tailing a stolen Cosworth along the motorway one night, and the car was easily outstripping the helicopter. Not surprising as the Cosworth was capable of 150+ mph and the helicopter about 110. The only way they managed to keep it in their sights was that the helicopter could cut straight across a couple of long sweeping bends in the motorway whereas the car had to go round their full length, but even then they struggled to keep up. He said he felt quite silly until the car was driven off the motorway into the built up area of the city and there was nowhere the car could get near its top speed.

Surely the best, for anyone who grew up in the 70s

Especially the Twin Plumen chamber Vitteses, on the Royal Protection Squads
Plus, who can forget it, if they saw it on 'Police Camera Action', the 'Liver Run'???
"Chapeau, lads!!!"

View attachment 147493 I used to see these on the motorway patrols all the time. And in proper jam sandwich livery.
The business, anything from 100MPH, at a time when 'cooking cars' struggled to achieve 80MPH, to towing artics off the carriageway, to dragging the worst wrecks from a RTC - be they lacking all wheels, or sliding along on the roof

I do offer though, the Vauxhall Senator

I vaguely remember being in Leeds one weekend (one tries to forget trips to Leeds) with an old school friend from Chapel Allerton, who happened to mention that the local police force had just taken possession of a "fleet" of Cossie 2000 Escorts. They were held in a secure compound, awaiting inspection and decals. 2 got nicked on the first night.
