Not the most cheerful..

When I was very young the conflict in Viet Nam dominated the news. It was an utterly senseless war as it turned out, although in 1965 I guess a lot of paitriotic Americans believed fervently that the Commie b*st*rds were out to get them! (They were right in a way, when you look at how 'Red' China is taking them on economically but they have only themselves to blame for that.)

A couple of decades or so later I met a Viet Nam vet whose German parents had emigrated to the states, where he was born. He was a trained civilian helicopter engineer. They persuaded him to go to 'Nam on the humanitarian pretext of helping ship out the wounded, as could fly helicopters. Soon they had him flying a gunship in action in which role he was wounded and sent home. We met him on the Isle of Skye when he came to repair our boat engine, he'd left the USA as soon as he could!

Lyrically I don't think there is much better, and I love the way (as with all solo, single instrument artists) that you can get a song across with the minimum accompaniment.

Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

There is a link between Roberta & Billy

I guess some of you know, but;
Ewan Macoll wrote 'First Time Ever', His daughter, Kirsty, covered Braggs 'A New England' (with extra verses wrote for her, by Billy)
