I definitely tend towards the extra stiffness of a secure mounting on the roof myself, rather than the chance of something going floppy at the rear end, it also has the benefit of making sure your signals are clear. Each to their own though.

I agree that the roof mount is probably a better option, until my inevitable barrier accident.

Shall have to do more research I think.

After reading the comments here I have decided to save then spend a little extra & go for a roof system.

Thule & several sites don't recommend bootie mounted racks with boot spoilers & I am fearful of damaging my rear end.

so your giving up the strap on for your three some incase you damage your rear end.

ah, so many jokes, so little time. lol

just watch with roof mounted racks that you remember the bikes are up there, over hanging branches, car park height restrictors or in my case McDonalds drive through height restrictors can all mangle a bike, in saying that I broke the McDonalds sign but didn't damage the bike which was lucky for me.

I guess in the end with cycle carriers .....it's all vehicle dependent.
I do know Thule do a rear hatch carrier which,through various components can be made to fit most hatchbacks and vans,without covering the registration plate.
For us, we have a Mazda Bongo Campervan with a Fiamma 4 bike carrier mounted on the door, a pal has the same but uses a Thule one .
Worth looking to see which is best before you part with your cash......
