Best TV series ever?

There are too many to choose from - if one goes back far enough. And I must carefully distinguish, between what was good TV, and what I enjoyed watching - the two are not synonymous. For example, the acting and storylines, and pseudo-SF-cr@p of Star Trek TOS - was frankly laughable, but I loved every bit of it. "Beam me up Scotty"* and all!

A few that have not yet been mentioned on the comedy front. Monty Python of course! The Goodies, Steptoe & Son, Dad's Army. I could lap it all up!

But if you're looking for a box set to buy, if you have any taste for period drama, I can strongly recommend The Forsyte Saga (the original 1967 version of course, not the re-make). It's the only box-set I actually bought in the past few years. Unsurpassable! Even if it was made in black and white.
